I woke up this morning, knowing I had forgotten something. And my good friend and mentor, Afaa Michael Weaver, reminded me just now on Twitter. It’s Langston Hughes’s birthday, y’all! And what sort of blues poet would I be if I didn’t celebrate this day?!
I love that the first day of Black History Month is his birthday. It just starts the month off right. Oh, I just adore this man. Here’s a link to Langston Hughes page on the Academy of American Poets website, including a recording of his reading “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.” My favorite poem by him is “The Weary Blues.” And here’s the cover from the first edition of that book. It’s just fabulous.
And need I remind you that “You Gotta Read This”?
